2020 Election Timeline
- October 2020: The state successfully conducted errorless performance of the voting equipment in pre-election Logic & Accuracy testing, overseen by political parties, candidates and the public.
- November 3, 2020: In Maricopa County, all votes were cast on Election Day using paper ballots. Counties must also retain the paper ballots for recounts and hand count audits, in accordance with law [R.S. § 16-602].
- November 9, 2020: In a test of the accuracy of vote tabulation equipment, Maricopa County's hand count audit showed a 100% match with the counts from Dominion machines.
- November 17, 2020: Republican Maricopa County Board Chair Clint Hickman issued a statement emphasizing there was, “no evidence of fraud or misconduct” regarding the election.
- November 30, 2020: The State of Arizona certified November 3, 2020 election results.
- February 2021: Results of second round of audits show “Maricopa County’s election equipment and software passed all tests performed by two independent firms hired to conduct the forensic audit, according to reports by two federally certified Voting System Testing Laboratories.” | View Results
- March 2021: Firms selected by Arizona Senators to conduct another audit of the 2020 presidential election results in Maricopa County are found to be “led by conspiracy theorists and QAnon supporters who have helped to spread the Big Lie.” | Read More
- April 2021: Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs sent a letter to the Maricopa Board of Supervisors on April 1, asking them to “do what is necessary to protect our voters and our democracy." She added via Twitter, “If the Senate’s intent was to build confidence in elections they wouldn’t have hired these conspiracy theorists.”
- May 2021: The Maricopa Board of Supervisors sent a response to the Senate leader regarding a May 12 letter to Board Chairman Sellers. Separately, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs sent a letter to the Maricopa Board of Supervisors on May 20 informing the county that the loss of chain of custody for voting equipment turned over to Senate contractors "constitutes a cyber incident to critical infrastructure" and informs the county that the state will not recommission the user of those systems.
There were no issues with use of Sharpie pens in Arizona.
- The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors assured voters that "sharpies do not invalidate ballots." the county “did extensive testing on multiple different types of ink with [their] new vote tabulation equipment."
- Dominion Voting machines can read Sharpies, and Dominion has previously stated that "Sharpie pens are safe and reliable to use on ballots, and recommended due to their quick-drying ink."
- Per the S. Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, "if a ballot has issues that impact its ability to be scanned, it can be hand counted."
